IELTS General Training format

Know exactly what the exam contains

IELTS General Training assesses Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening and Speaking are the same as IELTS Academic; Reading and Writing use General Training tasks and texts.

Listening

40 questions • 4 parts

Approximately 30 minutes. Parts 1–2 use everyday social situations; Parts 3–4 use educational and training contexts. Recordings are heard once.

Reading

40 questions • 3 sections • 60 minutes

Section 1 uses everyday texts, Section 2 focuses on workplace texts, and Section 3 uses a longer general-interest text.

Writing

2 tasks • 60 minutes

Task 1 is a letter of at least 150 words. Task 2 is an essay of at least 250 words.

Speaking

3 parts • 11–14 minutes

Part 1 is an interview, Part 2 is a prepared long turn from a task card, and Part 3 is a deeper discussion.
