How to use this training

Read the method, answer each practice check without looking at the explanation, then open the answer. Aim to understand why the distractors are wrong. That elimination habit matters as much as knowing the rule.

Module 1 • Use of English

Find the grammar signal before choosing

Linguaskill-style sentence questions often place similar-looking words together. Do not translate every option. Identify the missing function first: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, connector or fixed expression.

1. Scan

Read the complete sentence and locate time markers, prepositions and linking words.

2. Classify

Decide which grammatical form the gap requires before examining meanings.

3. Eliminate

Remove options with the wrong form, tense, pattern or logical relationship.

Practice check: The revised procedure should enable the team to respond more _____ to urgent requests.

A. efficient   B. efficiency   C. efficiently   D. efficiencies

Reveal the answer and method

C. efficiently. “Respond” is a verb, so it needs an adverb. Efficient is an adjective; efficiency and efficiencies are nouns.

Practice check: _____ the initial delay, the project was delivered before the final deadline.

A. Although   B. Despite   C. Nevertheless   D. Whereas

Reveal the answer and method

B. Despite. The gap is followed by the noun phrase “the initial delay.” Although and whereas require clauses; nevertheless normally begins a separate clause.

Module 2 • Reading comprehension

Read for purpose, detail and consequence

Read the question before the text. Then search for the relevant idea, not identical vocabulary: correct answers usually paraphrase the passage.

From next Monday, employees booking client meeting rooms must confirm attendance numbers by 3 p.m. the previous working day. Unconfirmed reservations will be released so other teams can use the space. The change follows several occasions when large rooms remained empty despite being marked as unavailable.

What is the main purpose of the change?

A. To reduce the number of client meetings
B. To make unused rooms available to other teams
C. To require clients to book their own rooms
D. To prevent meetings after 3 p.m.

Reveal the answer and method

B. The final sentence identifies the problem—reserved rooms stayed empty—and the new rule releases unconfirmed rooms. Option D misuses “3 p.m.” as a meeting restriction.

Fast reading rule: For purpose questions, connect the problem to the action. For detail questions, return to the exact sentence. For inference questions, choose only what the text supports—never what merely sounds reasonable.
Module 3 • Listening comprehension

Listen for intention, contrast and next action

Do not chase every word. Identify who is speaking, the situation, the problem and what should happen next. Words such as but, however, actually and unfortunately often introduce the tested information.

Before the audio

  • ✓ Read the options quickly.
  • ✓ Predict whether you need a person, reason, problem or action.
  • ✓ Notice meaningful differences between options.

During the audio

  • ✓ Follow the overall meaning.
  • ✓ Listen through corrections and contrasts.
  • ✓ Select the paraphrase, not the repeated keyword.

Listening simulation

“We planned to send the proposal this afternoon, but finance has not approved the revised figures yet. I’ll contact the client and ask whether tomorrow morning is acceptable.”

What will the speaker probably do next?

A. Rewrite the complete proposal
B. Ask finance to contact the client
C. Request a short extension from the client
D. Send the unapproved figures immediately

Reveal the answer and method

C. The contrast after “but” explains the delay, and the final sentence states the next action. “Ask whether tomorrow morning is acceptable” paraphrases requesting an extension.

Module 4 • Test strategy

Protect your time and your score

Do

  • ✓ Answer easier questions immediately.
  • ✓ Use grammar to eliminate before debating meaning.
  • ✓ Keep moving if one item is consuming too much time.
  • ✓ Choose the best supported answer, not a perfect imaginary one.

Avoid

  • ✗ Translating every sentence word by word.
  • ✗ Selecting an option only because the audio repeats it.
  • ✗ Adding information that the text never states.
  • ✗ Changing an answer without a clear reason.
